About the arts: Left field stretch

July 31, 2007|JENNIFER BRUMMETT

I'm down to the wire writing this column. Gah. Poor planning on my part. Or lack of focus. That whole "attention span of a gnat" thing.

Or maybe just a wandering mind. I hadn't made it to the grocery in a while to get a new stash of citrus green tea for my afternoon caffeine/sugar boost, so I was toting tea from home. It was jasmine green tea in a see-through plastic thing with what essentially is a straw on top. There's even a little sliding piece that goes over the straw to hide it that somebody's trying to patent.

And it occurred to me as I slurped my tea out of the straw on my see-through plastic container that what I had, really, was a sippy cup for adults. Is this the new trend? Because it had "Menopause the Musical" on the side, so it was advertising a show.

Anyway, I'm not sure how I feel about that. So I bought citrus green tea at the grocery and left the sippy cup at home.

Coloring contest

Christine Pointeau is sponsoring a coloring contest to fund her next self-published venture, a four-volume set of trade paperback comics titled "A Cappella."

Pointeau's series "explores life's deeper questions, including the question of why we fear - and whether that's a good and, perhaps, even necessary thing. To bring her newest vision to reality, Pointeau is sharing another work "Stray Tales: Vol. 1" at a discount.

The contest, detailed at www.comicspace.com/fun4all/, is simple. Participants purchase "Stray Tales" at a 20 percent discount, and are then invited to color the pages in any medium and e-mail (scanned 75-100 dpi) copies to her home page at info@riverbynight.com.

Participants are limited to two pages per entry. The entries will be posted in the Coloring Contest Gallery, with one of every 12 participants winning a prize.

Christine Pointeau will personally judge the entries. There will also be a special display section for children's entries.

'War' and 'Bourne'

I love one-word film titles. I recently saw the trailer for this action flick and I'm revved. It pits Jason Statham against Jet Li and should be spectabulous - well, if you like Jason Statham and Jet Li films. Which I do.

If nothing else, it will be a serious rush. Release date: Aug. 24.

Next up, though: "The Bourne Ultimatum." Haven't read the books; don't want to read the books; definitely want to see the film.

Summer just seems synonymous with action flicks.
