Football: Questions and Answers with EKU's Mark Dunn

July 31, 2007|LARRY VAUGHT

Former Harrodsburg star Mark Dunn is Eastern Kentucky's top returning rusher. He shares his thoughts on various subjects going into the season opener Sept. 1 at Kentucky.

Question: How do you feel about opening the season against the University of Kentucky?

Dunn: "I am very excited. There are a lot of Eastern Kentucky fans in Harrodsburg, but a lot are UK fans, too. I think it will be a good game. We have played 7-on-7 in the summer with them since I have been in college. I know some of them. We compete. I know we have the skill to play with them. It will be a very fun experience and I think it will be a great game.

"You can't beat playing in Commonwealth Stadium. UK does have great fans. To go into Commonwealth Stadium and play is an honor. Nobody will give us a chance, but we love that. We have nothing to lose if we just play as hard as we can."

Question: Can Eastern win the Ohio Valley Conference title this year?

Dunn: "Ever since I have been in college, we have been picked to have a great team and win the conference. We are capable of that. We have not made the playoffs yet. We have a huge senior class that wants to go out with a bang. I really feel we are going to do that. This is our last go-round and nobody wants to go out placing second in conference like we have been."

Question: What about life after this season at Eastern?

Dunn: "I am majoring in sports management. I was going to go into criminal justice, but I can't get away from sports. Hopefully I will be an athletics director or coach. I want to do high school athletics, not college. I feel I will be more useful in high school. I know as I was growing up in Harrodsburg, I didn't always know what I needed. I had three different high school coaches. I didn't have all the qualifications to be eligible for collegiate sports academically. I wasn't prepared properly, physically or mentally. Hopefully, I can come back and share some knowledge with kids that you have to work to succeed."

Question: Did playing three sports in high school rather than just concentrating on football hurt your college career, especially your first season?

Dunn: "That is true, but that is the price you pay for playing at a small school because you have the opportunity to play every sport. At a bigger school, you won't get that chance. I kind of wish I would have focused on maybe just football, but at the same time playing other sports helped me develop into a better athlete."
