National Night Out draws crowd

The hot and humid weather didn't deter the more than 100 people who attended National Night Out - a community-police partnership held the first Tuesday of August and sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch - at Lake Mingo Park.

"All of the communities across the nation who participate in the neighborhood watch are getting together," said Officer Larry Oliver, of the Nicholasville Police Department's Community Services Division. "Kathy Moores spearheads it every year and does a great job."

Oliver said one of the main purposes of the night is to increase awareness about police programs such as crime and drug prevention.

Moores and Oliver said the event also honored the other emergency personnel and agencies.

"We invited all of the emergency personnel because they are important to us and help us do our jobs," Oliver said.

A cookout kicked off the event, held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The night also featured games, a PowerPoint presentation by Blue Grass Energy on general safety when dealing with electricity, and the police department demonstrated its Fatal Vision program, where goggles are used to simulate varying levels of drunkenness.

Target and Save-A-Lot sponsored the Nicholasville event.
