Letter: Give youth more at Millennium

August 09, 2007

Dear Editor,

Usually once, maybe twice a week, I take a ride out to Millennium Park to drop a line, or in common terms, go fishing. This summer while the kids were out of school, I noticed there wasn't much going on at the park for the younger generation.

All I really ever saw were those dedicated, early morning walkers and the kind, loving, duck feeders.

In my opinion, looking at the structure of Millennium Park, Danville's leaders and decision makers are leaving lots of our kids out.

We need to provide our youth with a better variety of facilities and programs, and get them out of the house and more involved in social functions.

XBox, Playstation and Nintindo are great for keeping the kids at bay, but summer camp, and participation in social functions, will provide them with greater values in life.

My suggestion is to implement other structures and programs at Millennium Park that our kids can enjoy - like a public swimming pool, basketball courts, tennis courts, summer camp, etc. Skateboarding, baseball and softball are great activities, but is that all were going to offer our kids?

Millennium Park is a beautiful setting, and I'm sure we've all paid for it in some way. So all I'm asking is for it to be utilized for something other than what it already isn't. A place where all our kids can grow, not just baseball or softball players and skateboarders.
