Man charged in altercation prior to shooting

A 20-year-old man who was in an altercation prior to a drive-by shooting early Friday has been charged with terroristic threatening and menacing, police said.

John Bess Jr., of Heather Hills, Apt. 47, was arrested shortly after midnight Sunday on the charges, said Interim Police Chief Tony Gray.

Bess was lodged in the Boyle County Detention Center.

Gray said no one has been charged with the shooting, which was reported by Teresa Ford of 120 E. Walnut St., Apt. 1. The drive-by shooting was reported after a verbal altercation that happened earlier at Speedway on Main Street.

Witnesses told police Friday that an altercation escalated between two parties and that someone pulled a knife and made threats. Witnesses said the two parties separated and the person with the knife left the scene. Later, a vehicle drove up and shots were fired into an apartment at the Walnut Street building.

Man arrested in burglary

Christopher Brothers, 34, of 312 High St. has been arrested in connection with a burglary at 626 N. Third St., police said.

Brothers was arrested Friday night and charged with second-degree burglary and theft by unlawful taking less than $300. He was lodged in the Boyle County Detention Center.
