An update on various modernization projects was presented to members of the Housing Authority of Winchester at Monday night's quarterly meeting.

Edward Stone, executive director, reported that all roofs, painting and siding have been completed at Tyler Banks and the soffett and metal trim is 60 percent complete.

Porches in Memorial Park are 75 percent complete, water heaters and water valves at Memorial Park and Tyler Banks are completed, and the workers are waiting on door hardware for Memorial Park.

The installation of cabinets at Stevenson Heights is 80 percent completed, he said.

Stone also reported that 392 apartments of the 400 are under lease.

Two employees from John Lane, certified public accountant, conducted the annual audit Aug. 6-8 and on May 22 a representative from the Louisville Housing and Urban Development Field Office conducted a construction review and inspected property at all sites.

Stone reported that the management's discussion analysis had been received from the fee accountant and that the insurance premium for July 1, 2007-08 had been paid at a cost of $67,658.23.

A lightning strike during a storm on June 5 damaged the computer, telephone, fire and security systems at the main office in Sequoia Village, Stone said. He added that a lightning strike on a large tree in Smith Manor resulted in the removal of the tree.

Stone also reported that a resident placed a large candle in a glass container on the kitchen stove to melt the wax. This resulted in the breakage of the container and the melted wax causing major damage to the stove. The apartment received some smoke damage, Stone said, adding that the residents agreed to pay for the damage.

John G. Roche, chairman, presided over the meeting. In addition to Stone and Roche, others present were Deatra Newell and William Baker, commissioners, and Maxine Tackett, deputy director. Mayor Ed Burtner and Mary Davis vice chairman, were absent.
