Police news: Teen injured in Garrard crash

August 17, 2007

LANCASTER - A 16-year-old was injured Wednesday morning when his vehicle crossed the center line on U.S. 27 four miles north of Lancaster and struck an oncoming vehicle, state police said.

Joseph Allen, of Lancaster, suffered neck injuries. Three juvenile passengers, all of Lancaster, were not injured.

Allen apparently was driving south when he allowed his unit to travel across the center line into the north lane, according to a report by Trooper Michael Ashley.

The 1996 Volvo sideswiped a 2003 Ford Excursion driven by Allan Wymer, 71, of Gaylord, Mich., headed north.

A 1999 Ford F350 driven by Kenneth Maxwell, 30, of Lancaster, was headed north behind the Wymer auto and steered into a ditch to avoid impact with Allen's Volvo. The Volvo turned around and came to rest in the middle of the road, according to the police report.

Seat belts were in use in the three vehicles.

The wreckage tied up traffic in the southbound lane for more than an hour.
