Letter: Trent is right about smoking

August 29, 2007

Dear Editor,

Our Boyle County Health Department administrator, Roger Trent, should be applauded for having the integrity and the courage to take his job seriously. He proposes an end to smoking in public spaces so secondhand smoke is eliminated.

There is no greater threat to public health than the threat created by smoking. It takes a very strong and principled individual to propose a solution to this threat despite the fact that his proposal to end smoking in public spaces is politically unpopular with many people. Smokers can always move outside of public spaces if they choose to smoke. Nonsmokers cannot escape smoke in public spaces.

I hope that Mr. Trent continues to serve and to protect Boyle County's health. We need leaders who take their jobs seriously and who do not bow to political pressure.
