Golf notes: Ballard ninth in event

August 29, 2007|Graham Johns/Sun Golf Columnist

Clay Ballard fired a 72 to tie for ninth place in the professional division and 13th overall in the Larry Gilbert Lexington Open at Kearney Hill Golf Links.

Rick Smith shot 77 and tied for fourth place in the senior amateur division. Bryan Conway beat Cale Barr in a one-hole sudden-death playoff to win the tournament after the two were tied at 65.

The second round was canceled after a heavy rain, but the weather cleared long enough for the playoff.

STRIDE Scramble

Results of the STRIDE golf scramble held Aug. 20 at the Winchester Country Club were as follows:

First (63) - Brian Baber, Doug King, Doug King and Stuart Taylor.

Second (65) - Adam Rose, Rob Baldwin, Rick Mink and Francis Thomas.

Third (66) - Brandon Eason, Shane Foley, Chris LeMaster and Brandon Sumpter.

Hole-in-One

Sheila Drummond aced the 144-yard, par-3 fourth hole at Mahoning Valley Country Club near Lehighton, Pa.

So why am I reporting it? Drummond is blind, and the United States Blind Golfers Association believes she is the first totally blind female to record a hole-in-one. Her husband and coach, Keith, and two friends playing in a steady rain witnessed the shot.

Rule Quiz

When a river forms a part of the boundary of a course, the Committee must define it as a lateral water hazard. True or False?

Practice Tip

PGA golf professional Tim Graves with the Graves Golf Academy spent some time during the recent PGA Championship watching the pros practice. He made two keen observations. First, "at least 9 out of 10 of the professionals on the range had at least one alignment-type tool on the ground when they were practicing. Some were as simple as a golf club pointed to the target, some much more elaborate devices." Second, "without exception, more time was spent on the short game practice area than the driving range. Time was spent working on putting, chipping, pitching and bunker play."

Until next week, remember these words of Joe E. Louis: I play in the low 80s. If it's any hotter than that, I won't play.
