Letter: Stick with brass bands at festival

August 30, 2007

Dear Editor,

I would like to congratulate the community of Danville and the volunteers who make the Great American Brass Band Festival a success and such a wonderful experience. My wife and I have attended the festival for the last five years and we tell everyone we work with what a great time we have at the festival and invite them to come with us.

However, I would like to say that we were puzzled by the direction the GABBF seems to have taken this year by scheduling entertainment like the Dixie Power Trio, the Dirty Dozen Brass and the ragtime band. Although they were entertaining, I don't see how these bands were considered "brass bands."

It appears to us that the GABBF has decided to be a music festival that features brass bands. If the GABBF committee was sitting by the street on Saturday night they would have noticed how many people left during the Dixie Power Trio's set and then the many people who left once the Dirty Dozen Brass began to play. These people sat through the long set-up time the group took to prepare themselves to play, so for people to leave once the music started could be a indication the music didn't appeal to them.

Personally, I thought these non-brass groups should have been grouped together in a separate venue and just brass bands on the main stage. I hope you will consider my suggestion.
