JANE M. THOMPSON

Jane M. Thompson, an active leader in business education, passed away on Friday Aug. 24, at the Alta Bates Summit Hospital in Oakland, Calif., from a very aggressive form of lymphoma.

Jane was a native of Lexington, Va. She received her bachelor's degree from Madison College, now James Madison University, her master's degree from Indiana University, and her doctoral degree in education from Nova Southeast University.

She received numerous awards and recognition for her dedicated work. Jane was a professor in the Business Division of Education, focusing on computer education at Solano Community College in Fairfield, Calif., until her retirement in 2002.

She was the President of the National Business Education Association in 1995, the Western Business Education Association in 1992, and the California Business Education Association in 1981.

She was also involved in the International Business Association (SEIC) attending many conferences, and served as co-editor for the Journal for Global Business Education for five years.

She received the Distinguished Faculty Award in 2002 from the Academic Senate of Solano Community College and also served for several years on the statewide Academic Senate Committee. Jane developed grants for business education for her school, the state, and multi-state levels. She was a strong advocate of vocational education. Jane was a friend and mentor to many, and she will be greatly missed.

Jane was the daughter of the late John H. R. Thompson and the late Thelma Major Thompson. She is survived by her husband, Phil E. Thompson; a sister, Joan T. Martin, and brother-in-law, Robert M. Martin and family; a sister ,Jacqueline T. Kovalic, and brother-in-law Peter P. Kovalic, both of Winchester, and family; and a cousin, Rosemary Grimsley, who resides with Jane and Phil. She was a world traveler and an avid skier and golfer.

Services were held Thursday, Aug. 30, at 1 p.m. at the Chapel of the Chimes at 4499 Piedmont Ave., Oakland, Calif. Interment will be in the Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland.

GRACE M. BEDFORD

Grace M. Bedford, 83, of 2565 Thomson Station Road, widow of the late Dr. A. Goff Bedford, died at 2:35 a.m. Thursday at her home.

Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Scobee Funeral Home by the Rev. Mark J. Myers. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday.

Burial will be in Winchester Cemetery.
