Letter: Vandalism began at Danville

September 09, 2007

Dear Editor,

When you grow up in "Title Town" you learn to have a lot of support for your high school football team, whether it's Danville or Boyle County.

As students who attend Danville, we undoubtedly support our Ads against Boyle County each year with strong school spirit.

Although we believe that a healthy competition between two rival schools always makes the game more intense for the players and fun for the fans, we disagree with the extent that "school spirit" has gone to this year.

John Nelson's article in Thursday's Advocate-Messenger about the vandalizing of Boyle County's football stadium focused on the damage supposedly inflicted by Danville fans but failed to include both sides of the story.

Unfortunately, this one case at the Boyle stadium of vandalism was not a solitary instance. Danville field manager Danny Gadberry discovered that they were victims of vandalism earlier that week and on Friday morning (though no complaints were made to the police.)

Monday, before a junior varsity football game, vandalism promoting Boyle County was spray-painted on the anchor outside Admiral stadium.

Later that week on Friday morning pro-Boyle County, vulgar and racial language was spray-painted on the faade of Danville High School.

Though we do not support the acts of vandalism on either side, we would like the public to be aware that Danville's property was first defaced and any retaliation upon Boyle County, if made by Danville enthusiasts, was possibly in response to earlier actions taken by Boyle supporters.

We encouraged our Danville players to use these acts of vandalism to their advantage in Friday night's big game by channeling their emotions into motivation and to keep our "Title Town" full of players that play with passion and fans who cheer for a healthy rivalry.
