Take a walk through Abraham Lincoln's life

Editor's note: Kentucky is making plans to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of its native son, President Abraham Lincoln, on Feb. 12, 2009. The official public commemoration begins February 2008 and closes February 2010, but many events are already under way. In preparation for the big day, The Advocate will be sharpening readers' knowledge of Lincoln.

HODGENVILLE - A free living-history event Wednesday will portray life on the frontier during Abraham Lincoln's childhood days. The second annual Walk through Lincoln's Life is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site in Hodgenville.

The event is geared toward students, but the public is welcome. Costumed Chautauqua characters, musicians and demonstrations are all part of the event.

How did Abraham Lincoln get the nickname of Honest Abe?

It is believed he was given this nickname as a young man. Abraham Lincoln worked in a small store as a clerk. Once a person came to buy an item and Lincoln did not give him the correct amount in change.

Lincoln walked a long distance to give this person the correct amount of change. After this incident, it is believed that Lincoln was called "Honest Abe."
