Local business search is here

October 03, 2007|John Preston

The evolution of our Web site continues. If you've been to www.winchestersun.com in the last week or so, you've probably noticed a big logo at the top of the page that says FindItKy.com.

That's our new local search engine. It's pretty cool. It lets you search for anything you want to right here in the Winchester area.

It also gives all of our local businesses the chance to connect with their potential customers.

You can think of it as an online Yellow Pages. However, businesses can put a lot more information about themselves on FindItKy than they can on any traditional directory.

They can include pictures, menus, sales brochures, web links, etc. All of this adds up to a better way for you find exactly what you're looking for.

FindItKy also has a couple of other functions that sweeten the pot even more.

In addition to finding local businesses, it will also search through our classifieds, recent news archives, and local websites to locate other information that you might find interesting.

Let's say you wanted to find someone to repair your lawnmower.

A search for "lawn mower repair" might turn up three or four businesses in the area that repair lawn mowers, a classified listing for someone wanting to do repairs, and a news story about winterizing your lawn mower.

As you can see, FindItKy is a pretty powerful tool for finding the information you need.

We're doing the same thing on the Web sites for our sister newspapers in Stanford, Nicholasville, and Danville.

I suggest that if you run a business in the area you should go online and look at the listing for your company. If some of the information isn't correct, you can make the changes yourself.

If your business isn't listed for some reason or another, you can add it to the database.

This is just one of several exciting projects we have coming down the pipe in the next few months.

I'll do my best to make sure to keep you in the loop.
