Letter: Code enforcement is lacking on property

October 07, 2007

Dear Editor,

What is wrong with code enforcement in Danville, Ky.?

The city has a nuisance ordinance covering the excessive growth of grass, weeds, other growth and the accumulation of rubbish. The ordinance is very plain and simple. There are no big words, and it is only one page long covering this subject. It's easy to read.

I believe a property in town is in violation of this ordinance. The city of Danville refuses to enforce compliance on this property for some unknown reason. This problem has been going on now for six years. I have filed complaints to the city code enforcement officer 24 times. I have appeared before the city commission meetings and asked for help with this issue several times since 2002. The current city manager came and viewed the weeds and trash violations on Aug. 3, 2007.

A city commissioner came, at my request, on Aug. 27, 2007, viewed the violations and reported them back to the city manager. Still no help.

The zone change document for this property states that it is to be developed in two years. I think the builder may also have been allowed to disregard other conditions of the zone change. The planning and zoning commission has refused to provide a proper screening along the north property line as is already in place on the south and west sides. I have filed complaints to the planning and zoning commission several times since 2004. Still no help.

A request for help from the Boyle County Attorney on May, 9, 2006, was refused.
