Funds needed for cemetery upkeep

CRAB ORCHARD - Funds are needed for the upkeep of Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery, according to Flonnie Shelton of Crab Orchard. The church is on Bryant Ridge Road in Brodhead. Area marching bands to compete

Area marching bands will compete Saturday in Louisville. Danville High School will compete in Class 2A at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ballard High School; Mercer, Boyle and Garrard High Schools' bands will compete in Class 3A at 12:15 p.m., 1:15 p.m. and 1:45 p.m., respectively at Eastern High School.

Gospel sing to benefit child

JUNCTION CITY - A gospel sing is planned 1 p.m. Saturday at Junction City Community Park to benefit 4-year-old Haley Milroy of Casey County who has Fanconi anemia.

Guest singers are the Turner Family of Stanford, Lonnie King of Somerset and Given Hope (Grant and Whitney Alford) of Moreland.

Gift-wrapping workshop set

STANFORD - A gift-wrapping and bow-making workshop is planned for 10 a.m. Oct. 26 at the Lincoln County Cooperative Extension Service office.

Debra Parrish, Anderson County extension agent for family and consumer sciences, will be the instructor.

Participants will learn to make several bows and explore various gift-wrapping ideas. Those who want a package bow to take home are asked to bring scissors, pen/marker and flexible plastic lid. Bring gift-wrapping ideas to share.

Call the extension service at (606) 365-2447 for information. This is a homemaker leader training and is open to the public.

Historian to speak at Civil War lecture

Civil War historian Kirk C. Jenkins will speak as part of the Gen. Lovell H. Rousseau Civil War Lecture Series at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Boyle County Public Library on Broadway.

Jenkins' talk is titled "The 15th Kentucky U.S. in the Civil War." The lecture is free and open to the public.

Jenkins is an eighth generation Kentuckian who is a distinguished attorney in Chicago

After his talk, Jenkins will be signing copies of his book, and a limited quantity will be available for purchase.

The Rousseau Series will conclude Nov. 15 with a talk by Don Rightmyer.

Meeting

Danville-Boyle County Recreation Commission - 4 p.m. Wednesday at Millennium Park, Kroger Rotary Shelter. New business includes discussion of Centre College's use of facility, operational budget 2008/09 and maintenance concerns.
