Campers spend break learning

October 18, 2007|Nancy Leedy

Last week was a break from instruction for most Lincoln County students but, for 33 hoops hopefuls, there was no "fall break" as they took part in the annual Patriot Basketball Camp.

The week-long camp, led by LCHS boys coach Jeff Jackson, was open to boys and girls in kindergarten through eighth-grade and provided one-on-one instruction in basketball from the basic fundamentals on up.

"The kids have done real well," said Jackson. "They've worked hard and had a lot of fun. The week went fast but I think they've learned a lot, at least, I hope they have."

Jackson's assistant coaches, Brad Petrey, Shawn Conley and Dean Jones, helped with camp instruction throughout the week along with Morgan Brown, Amber Newcomb and Kevin Bandura.

The camp featured free-throw competition, hot-shot competition, a self-improvement program and special guest lecturers.

The camp is fun, but the "little extras" at the close of camp, a camp T-shirt and a pizza party, could possibly be more fun.

"They've worked hard all week and they deserve it. They love it," Jackson said, looking at the campers waiting for their shirts and pizza. "We always want to teach them to love the game, but we also like for them just to have fun together and they are."

The 2007 fall basketball campers were: Weston Smith, Dalyn Pope, Marcus Cummins, Kade Bandura, Madisen Hinkle, Jessica Phillips, Jedediah Price, Chase Phillips, Taven Steberl, Brandon Bryant, Luke Smith, Alexus Kendrick, Devin Snow, Desiree Wilson, Trae Wittemore, B.J. Hoover, Heidi Huffman, Neal Conley, Kelsi Honaker, David Phillips, Rachel Spangler, Kelly Coleman, Jordan Walls, Tyler Dotson, Brett DeShon, Luke Hill, Shade Jacobs, Ben Banks, Ronnie Sharp, Trenton Edgington, Chris Butler, Ryne Otto and Cameron Honaker.
