Dems to appear at breakfast

October 25, 2007|Sun Staff Report

Democratic candidate for governor Steve Beshear and his running mate, state Sen. Daniel Mongiardo, D-Hazard, are scheduled to appear at a campaign breakfast Friday morning in Winchester.

All residents are invited to the free breakfast, which will begin at 7 a.m. at Cantuckee Diner on Carol Road.

The breakfast will be a full meal.

Beshear and Mongiardo will speak, and all other candidates on the Democratic ticket have been invited, but are not confirmed.

Beshear and Mongiardo are running for governor this November against the incumbent Republican Gov. Ernie Fletcher and his running mate Robbie Rudolph.

This is Beshear's second gubernatorial campaign. The Lexington lawyer who lives on a farm in western Clark County, ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination in 1987, when he was lieutenant governor under Martha Layne Collins. Prior to that, he was the state's attorney general and a former state legislator.

Mongiardo, an eastern Kentucky physician, has served in both houses of the state legislature and ran a close race against incumbent Jim Bunning for Kentucky's junior U.S. Senate seat in 2004.

Other Democratic candidates for state office are incumbent Auditor of Public Accounts Crit Luallen, who is seeking re-election; Louisville lawyer Jack Conway for attorney general; Bruce Hendrickson for secretary of state; Todd Hollenbach for state treasurer; and David Lynn Williams for commissioner of agriculture.
