Remains may not belong to local man

A missing person case police thought was closed Monday after a year and a half of searching for Winchester resident Thomas Profitt is open again.

According to Winchester Police Det. Danny Thomas, skeletal remains found Monday that the Spencer County Sheriff Department thought belonged to Profitt didn't match his description after all.

Emily Craig, the state medical examiner, told Thomas yesterday that the round wire-rimmed glasses found at the scene were not an identical match to those worn by Profitt, as first reported.

And hair next to the skull was a shade of brown, not gray, which is also inconsistent with original reports. Thomas further discovered there are 13 missing person cases in Kentucky of men that also wear size 13 boots, such as the ones found in Spencer County.

"It gets frustrating," Thomas said. "I feel bad for the family, I mean they were hopeful we could put this to closure and give him a proper burial."

Profitt, 46, was reported missing May 3, 2006 by his wife, Anna Profitt, who lives in Winchester. Police have followed many tips of the man being sighted throughout Central Kentucky, but none have panned out.

"I'm happy that it's not him," Thomas said. "But he's gotta be somewhere."

Investigators are awaiting dental and medical records checks to confirm if the remains are Profitt's.
