Parent who rushed field at Garrard expected to plead guilty

LANCASTER - The Wayne County man charged with disorderly conduct after rushing the field during a Garrard County High School football game is expected back in court Monday for a pretrial hearing.

Kirby Thompson, 50, of Monticello, pleaded not guilty earlier in the month after being advised that more charges could follow.

During a Friday night game on Oct. 19, Thompson apparently got upset after a Wayne County player received a jarring hit. Thompson ran onto the field, according to Deputy Sheriff Brandon Conley's report.

Thompson was charged with disorderly conduct, but because some accounts had Thompson also striking a player, a television station's video recording of the game was requested to be reviewed.

County Attorney Jeff Moss said Thompson was prepared to plead guilty during arraignment on Nov. 5, but Moss advised him not to. Moss said because the videotape had not been reviewed yet, he told Thompson that further charges could be made.

"The officer didn't see the hit, so he couldn't do an assault charge," Moss said.

The video was finally received on Nov. 3, and Moss met with the mother of the player that was smacked on the head.

"We reviewed the video, and she declined to file an assault charge as long as Mr. Thompson pleaded guilty to the disorderly conduct charge," Moss said.

Players and coaches from both teams also came onto the field during the incident, and some fans were ejected after entering the playing field. A player from each team also was ejected.

Disorderly conduct is a Class B misdemeanor, which means Thompson could get a maximum of 90 days in jail and a fine up to $250, plus court costs.

The pretrial hearing is set for 9 a.m. Monday in Garrard District Court.
