Letter: Prosecutor should be ashamed

November 21, 2007

Dear Editor,

I remember when Mr. Caldwell was arrested for allegedly shooting Mr. Trachsel. I wondered at the time what would drive an elderly man to do something like that. When I saw him on the newscasts he seemed like a harmless old man.

I also remember thinking that Boyle County would be able to save itself some money by not bothering to try him. It was a while after the incident that Mr. Caldwell was shown on TV but he looked too weak and ill by then to be put on trial. Anyone could see that, so why bother to go to all of the expense, time and obvious aggravation to witnesses and others of putting him on trial?

Well, lo and behold, Boyle County prosecutors are doing just that. It looks ridiculous on the news that this feeble old man has to be wheeled into the court room with his oxygen and have a nurse stay by his side so you can try him. What on earth is the point except to make yourselves look silly? From the looks of him, he'll be lucky to make it to the end of the trial let alone hurt anyone else. I laugh every time I see the prosecutor strutting around the courtroom and then they show Mr. Caldwell in obvious serious condition.

Yes, I guess you'd better get him off the streets. He is a dangerous criminal and the prosecutor has to make sure he doesn't harm anyone else. Right. It is just silly. If you have all that money to throw around on useless and pointless trials, I'm sure the Salvation Army could use some of it right about now and would put it to much better use.

What a sad waste to a beautiful county with wonderful people. The citizens of Boyle County should make the prosecutor pay for this trial out of his own pocket. He should be ashamed and embarrassed.
