Poor shooting dooms Jaguars against Nelson

The East Jessamine girls didn't were missing their floor general Tuesday night.

That combined with poor shooting and low rebound totals dropped the Jaguars on the road against Nelson County to open the season, 56-36.

Ashley Willoughby, junior point guard, was scratched from the lineup due to illness, Coach Ralph Sallee said.

"We found out the day before Ashley wasn't going to be there," he said. "And we weren't able to make a quick adjustments."

The Jaguars were in the game through the first half, but the Cardinals pulled away in the third quarter, in large part due to East's inability to get shots to fall in. The team was 16-for-49 shooting on the night.

"We played well early, but we couldn't put it in the basket," Sallee said. "We struggled in the third quarter."

The Jaguars were out-rebounded and didn't get a lot of second looks.

"Rebounding is an issue we have to address immediately," Sallee said.

Samantha Drake was the difference make for the Cardinals despite putting up just 12 points, the University of Kentucky signee altered shots inside and kept East from finding an offensive rhythm.

On the outside, Nelson County looked to limit the Jaguars' range. East was able to hit attempt just two three-point shots in the game and connected on one of those.

"They were in man-to-man," Sallee said. "They wanted to stop our outside shots and they did."

Nicole Marx, Erin Sieberkrob and McKenzie Katsman each scored six points for the Jaguars. Krichelle Ford and Emily Underwood added five apiece.

Marx also pulled down 10 rebounds. Aretha Johnson and Liz Miller each had six boards.

The girls will travel to Louisville to take part in the Eastern Extravaganza.

"It's one of the older classics in the state," Sallee said. "It's nice to be in there. There are some really nice teams involved. We're real blessed to be invited."

The Jaguars tip off at 11 a.m. Saturday against Oldham County.
