James Cecil Helms, 70, of Ashland and husband of Emma Marguaret McCarty Helms died Tuesday, Nov. 20 at his home. Born Nov. 12, 1937 in Boyle County he is the son of the late James Vernon and Martha Jane Hughes Helms. He was a retired Boyd County Road Department truck driver and attended Crum Chapel Church. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, two sons, Larry Eugene and William Cecil Helms, two sisters, Nancy Helms and Betty Moore and two grandchildren. He is survived by his son Roger and wife Daisy Helms of Nicholasville, four daughters, Annie and husband Paul Allen, Paula and husband Chris Long, Betty and husband Jeff Elswick, all of Ashland, Jamie Penix of Paintsville, Ky., 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, a brother, Martin L. Helms of Worthington, Ky., and two sisters Paulette Williams of Ashland and Mary Blankenship of Coal Grove, Ohio. Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 24 at Lazear Funeral Home with Pastor William Smith and Pastor Ronald D. Mounts. Burial followed in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens. Visitation was Friday, Nov. 23, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Memorials can be sent to Community Hospice, 1538 Central Ave. Ashland, KY 41101.
