James Alan Spurlin, 76

James Alan Spurlin, 76, of Preachersville, died Sunday, Nov. 25 at his home.

A native of Madison County, he was born Oct. 6, 1931 to the late James R. and Nevelyn Alexander Spurlin. He was a former member of the Lincoln County School Board (11 years) and was instrumental in the consolidation of Lincoln County High School, owned and operated Dix River Valley Farms, helped develop West Wood Apartments and the Spurlin Funeral Homes, served in Okinawa, Japan during the Korean War, and was a member of Drakes Creek Baptist Church where he was a trustee and former treasurer.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Anderson Spurlin of Preachersville; three sons, Jim (Libby) Spurlin of Lancaster, Dr. Mark Spurlin of Danville, and Barry Spurlin of Preachersville; a brother, George Spurlin; and seven grandchildren, Jessica, Kimberly, James David, Mark Alan, Ashley, Ethan and Haley Spurlin.

Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. today (Nov. 29) at Spurlin Funeral Home in Stanford and 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30 at the Spurlin Funeral Home in Lancaster.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Dec. 1 at 1 p.m. at Drakes Creek Baptist Church in Preachersville with Revs. David Gambrel and Joe Cooper officiating. Burial will be in the Lancaster Cemetery.

Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Caswell Saufley Post #18.

Active pallbearers are Mark Alan, James David, and Ethan Spurlin, David Abee, James T. Rankin, Alan Bolhman, Harold Kurtz, and Harvey Howard. Honorary pallbearers are Marvin and Barbara Perkins, Drs. Robert and Martha Grise, Billy Jean VanHook, Mike Kurtz, Rufus Walker West, Rosalea and Lisa Boone, Carolyn Rankin, Theo and Helen Nantz, B. C. and Louvenia Allen, Dr. Richard Nallinger, Dr. Brian Ellis, Dr. Anjum Bux, Dr. John Lacy, Dr. Greg Carlsen, Dr. Charles Campbell, Georgia Colon, Delsie Brown, Arlene Yocum, Francis Sloan, and the Drakes Creek Baptist Adult Sunday school class.
