Hatfield crowned State Festival Queen

Jaylan Hatfield, 6-year-old daughter of Tara Burke of Wilmore was recently named Kentucky State Festival Queen at a pageant held at the Hyatt Regency in Lexington.

Jaylan scored higher than anyone else and was named Grand Supreme Queen. Her prizes included a trophy, $1,000 savings bond, silver jewelry, diamond earrings, webkins, $100 scholarship to Images Modeling Agency, an embroidered sash, a white faux fur robe and a supreme crown. She also won most beautiful in her age division and overall themed photograph winner.

She will be making several appearances through the state during her years' reign. She has chosen collecting toys for the University of Kentucky Children's Hospital as her Ambassador Project. If anyone is interested in helping, call (859) 913-6601.

Jaylan is a first grade student at Wilmore Elementary School.

Jessamine celebrates its birthday Dec. 19

On Dec. 19, 1798 the Kentucky Legislature acted to create the state's 36th county, Jessamine, 101,00 acres carved entirely out of Fayette's 264,000 acres. Jessamine was given one representative and Fayette kept six. The town of Nicholasville had been laid out and named three months earlier on Sept. 16, 1798.

A year later in August 1799 lots were auctioned. The highest priced lot was where Planning and Zoning and Circuit Clerk's office is now located.

The Commonwealth Attorney's office, old Walker Hotel and Nicholasville Baptist Church were the next highest.
