East girls earn 1-3 mark during Berea tournament

December 26, 2007|Casey Castle

The East Jessamine High girls got off to a strong start in the Berea Holiday Classic. The Jaguars split the first two games of the tournament, falling to Jackson County by just six, 60-54 and winning big, 65-43 over Harlan.

But the team struggled in the next two games, falling to hot-shooting Somerset 48-31 and dropping a 42-32 decision to Bryan Station last Saturday.

The Bryan Station game proved to be a very physical one and the Jaguars struggled against the bigger, more athletic Bryan Station club. But the team struggled shooting as well.

"We get into those kind of games and we don't fare well," Coach Ralph Sallee said. "I thought that hurt us. We shot 9-for-54. We're struggling with our shooting right now."

Ashley Willoughby led the Jaguars with nine points. Liz Miller added six.

The team was playing without Krichelle Ford.

Ford's status with the team is uncertain.

"We had to make some adjustments, we're one key player short," Sallee said. "We've been playing four gaurds a lot, so to go with three and adjust back to playing in the middle of the tournament without practicing, being able to make some of those adjustments with her being gone."

East also struggled with rebounding. The Jaguars couldn't get second looks and struggled on the defensive boards.

"It's like every other game, it seems like we'll rebound pretty well one game," Sallee said. "And then against this athletic team, sometimes we didn't put bodies on people."

Aretha Johnson and McKenzie Katzman each had four points. Emily Underwood, Erin Sieberkrob, and Amanda Willoughby scored three points apiece.

Mikyla Mosby and Nealy Williams each scored 11 points for the Defenders to lead all scorers. Alesha Prince added ten points in the winning effort.

The Jaguars showed promise with the two strong performances early in the tournament but shooting struggles torpedoed the team's effort to make some noise in the huge holiday tournament.

"We've had two games down here where we just didn't put the ball in the basket."

The Jaguars travel to Doss to participate in the Lady Dragon Invitational tonight.
