Football: Lincoln players named all-state

January 10, 2008

The Lincoln County football team reached the Class AAAAA semifinals this past season, and two members of that team, Dustin Brummett and Ryan Young, were named to the Associated Press All-State second team defense Wednesday.

Brummett, a linebacker, led Lincoln in with 148 while picking off one pass, recovering three fumbles and blocking a punt.

"Dustin is one of those guys that just find the football. He loves to play, loves the contact and loves to play linebacker," Lincoln coach Larry French said. "He's just a great kid that gives 100 percent every play."

Young, a defensive back, had 11 interceptions and nearly 80 tackles this season.

"Ryan was probably the big playmaker offensively and defensively for us the last two year," French said. "He just had an exceptional season. He always covered the best receiver the other team had, and we'd flip-flop him a lot to be bale to cover those guys."

Lincoln went 11-3 last season and lost to eventual state champion Fort Thomas Highlands in the state semifinals.

Offensive lineman Daniel Walls, the Advocate-Messenger Lineman of the year, was named honorable mention all-state.

Record-setting quarterback Cory Robinson of Lone Oak was voted Mr. Football after throwing for a national record 91 touchdowns and breaking the state mark with 5,872 yards passing. Lone Oak went 14-1 and advanced to the Class AAAA title game.

Robinson received nine of 12 votes. Boone County running back Cory Farris, Bowling Green wide receiver D.L. Moore and Somerset wide receiver John Cole received one vote each.

Coach of the Year honors went Ty Scroggins of Central and Shawn Berner of Fort Campbell. Central (Class AAA) won its first state football title and Berner led Fort Campbell to the Class AA crown.

Other coaches who received votes for Coach of the Year were Mark Brown of John Hardin; Ben Bruni, Warren East; Jack Haskins, Lone Oak; Dudley Hilton, Bell County; Wayne Lohaus, Fulton City; and Paul Rains, Lexington Christian.

The teams were selected by 13 media representatives from across the state.
