Somerset outscores West 18-10 in the final quarter to pick up win

The West Jessamine Colts became victim number 10 for the Briar Jumpers in Somerset.

The Jumpers stretched their winning streak to 10 games at the expense of the Colts last Tuesday night, 54-45.

Senior Tyler Bourne led the charge for Somerset with 25 points and seven rebounds.

The Jumpers took an early lead 4-0 to start the game but West answered with a 6-0 run.

Both teams were hot from the floor in the first half. The teams combined to miss just six shots in the first 16 minutes.

The Colts took a 16-11 lead through the first quarter. The West defense continued to look strong, forcing seven turnovers in the first quarter.

Bourne hurt the Colts in the first half, though, getting 16 of his points. The Colts took just a two-point lead in at the half.

Somerset's John Coomer tossed in six of his seven points in the third quarter to help the Jumpers to a 8-5 advantage in the quarter.

The Colts trailed by just one, 36-35 going into the fourth quarter.

The Jumpers started the final stanza with a 8-3 run.

The Jumpers didn't look back and extended its lead with free throws as the West comeback fell short.

The Colts were outscored 18-10 in the final stanza.

Jared Polson led the Colts with 15 points on the night. Richard Florence added 11 and Gulian Blanton tossed in nine.

Somerset improved to 14-4 on the year. The Colts falls to 10-8 this season.

"They (the Colts) are a really good team and they haven't been ranked in the tops of the region all year for nothing," Somerset Coach Shawn Thacker said. "This was a good win for us that will help us down the road.

The Colts return home tonight to host Burgin before hosting the 2008 Colt Classic Saturday. West will play the final game, set for 7 p.m., against Scott Covington High.

The Colts will then have nearly a week off before traveling to Mercer County next Friday.
