Cox seeking his sixth term as commissioner

Shannon J. Cox, 48, of 111 Ashland Ave., has filed for re-election to the Winchester Board of Commissioners. He was first elected in 1998 and has served in the position since he was re-elected in 2000.

A graduate of George Rogers Clark High School and the University of Kentucky, Cox has a master's degree from Easter Kentucky University. He currently teaches at GRC and previously taught at Clark Middle School and Conkwright Middle School. Cox is a member of the Kentucky, Clark County and National Education Associations.

He is an assistant football coach at GRC and has coached football at Conkwright and track at Clark Middle. Cox also formally coached baseball, tennis, track and girls' basketball at the high school.

Cox served as a board member of Winchester Little League Baseball for 17 years until his retirement and is a former member of the Winchester-Clark County Parks and Recreation Board. He is a certified official with the Kentucky High School Athletic Association and has officiated NCAA and NAIA baseball. Cox has umpired state championship baseball tournaments in several youth organizations. He has also served as a coach with Winchester Little League Baseball, Winchester Connie Mack Baseball and Prep Little League Basketball.

The candidate is a member of Central Baptist Church, a founding member of the Winchester Retirement Place Board, the Gideon's and the Wickliffe Society. Cox serves as chairman of the Winchester Salvation Army service board and serves on the board of the Southwind Drum and Bugle Corps.

Cox has been a Teen Court coordinator since its inception, a former member of the Clark County-Winchester Heritage Commission, the Winchester Historic Preservation Commission, and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. He is listed in "Outstanding Young Men of America and "Who's Who in America's Teachers" and serves on the nomination and selection committee of both organizations. Cox also serves on the advisory council of the AXA Scholarship Committee and as a chairman of the East Kentucky Scholarship Council.

As a member of the city commission, Cox has received Leadership Fellow and Leadership Executive awards from the Kentucky League of Cities. The New Cities Foundation of KLC has also awarded him with a Bronze and Silver Level Leadership recognition.

Cox was Kentucky's only participant in the 2002 and 2004 21st Century Leadership Conferences in Washington D.C. and was a presenter at the conference in 2006. He will also be a participant in the National League of Cities Expanding Learning Opportunity Conference in May. The candidate is active in and serves on two committees of the National League of Cities Commission on Youth, Education and Families.

He has also served on the city's insurance committee, the museum task force, the adult entertainment ordinance committee and the hazard mitigation committee. Cox is also credited with introducing the Project Lifesaver program to the city commission.
