January 30, 2008

Lincoln County was outscored by 22 points at the free throw line Tuesday and fell to 12th Region contender McCreary Central 77-68 at Stearns. It was Lincoln's first loss to a regional team this season.

Ryan Young scored 26 points and Ethan Spurlin scored 17 for Lincoln (14-4), which saw its nine-game winning streak snapped.

McCreary (19-2), led by Aaron Watts' 34 points, went 32-for-40 at the foul line while Lincoln was 10 of 15.

The Raiders led 31-26 at the half and 47-41 after three quarters.

"Our team played much better after being tense and struggling in the Mason-Dixon Tournament. I told the team before the game just to play relaxed and have fun," coach Mike Yance said. "So they just had fun and were back to their old selves tonight."

KSD led 30-9 after the first quarter and 40-20 at the half.

Burgin 55, Berea 45 - At Berea, Bev Harris scored 13 of her 30 points in the fourth quarter as Burgin downed Berea in the Bluegrass Conference Tournament semifinals.

Alyson Burke hit four 3-pointers and scored 19 points for the Bulldogs (9-6), who will host the winner of Sayre and Nicholas County in the final at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Berea led 40-36 to start the fourth quarter before Harris, who also had 11 rebounds, led the comeback. She made 11 of 16 free throws on the night.

KSD 54, St. Rita 20 - At Danville, Victoria Thompson had 26 points and 14 rebounds and Amanda Wyatt scored a season-high 20 points to lead the Colonels (5-15) over Cincinnati St. Rita School for the Deaf.

"We used a strong zone, and we were pretty aggressive on defense and that seemed to help get us some fastbreak points off of turnovers," KSD coach Scott Johnson, who was pleased with his team's 15 steals and just 13 turnovers. "We reduced that bugaboo, too.

"We have five wins, which was our goal. Now we have a new goal of 10, so we hope we can get five more before the season ends."

KSD trailed 8-6 after the first quarter, but 26-14 at the half and 35-16 after three quarters.
