February 04, 2008

HODGENVILLLE - The first marker of the Kentucky Lincoln Heritage Trail will be unveiled 3 p.m. Feb. 12 at Lincoln Square.

Gov. Steve Beshear and other special guests are on the program to celebrate the national and statewide kickoff of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial with the community, city and county officials and the state Lincoln Heritage Trail partners.

Since President Lincoln loved cream candy and served it in the White House, the MAM Candy of Hodgenville will have a candy pulling demonstration as a tribute to President Lincoln, who loved cream candy and served it at the White House.

Other events include the serving of a birthday cake and a "Lincoln and Landscapes" art display at the Lincoln Museum community room from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and entertainment will be by the LaRue County Band of Hawks.

Boyle County, where Lincoln's grandmother Lucey Shipley Hanks Sparrow lived for several years, and Mercer County also are among the counties to get Lincoln Heritage Trail markers.

The Lincoln Heritage Trail will be comprised of 12 primary sites along the main circuit of the trail, with various spurs to place Abraham Lincoln within a broader Kentucky context. The main circuit of the trail will focus on Boyle, Breckinridge, Fayette, Franklin, Hardin, Jefferson, Jessamine, Larue, Madison, Mercer and Washington counties. The main circuit also passes through Bullitt, Garrard, Nelson, Shelby and Woodford counties, with several other counties being affected by spur routes.

The inaugural marker in the new Kentucky Lincoln Heritage Trail depicts the founding of Hodgen's Mill, the community that came to be known as Hodgenville, and the connection between this early settlement and the Lincoln family. Twenty-six additional markers will be placed along the trail throughout the spring and summer of 2008, all relating President Lincoln's Kentucky story and highlighting the key people, places and events that firmly established Lincoln as a Kentuckian.

The Kentucky Lincoln Heritage Trail will include directional and interpretive signage, a brochure, map and Web site detailing sites throughout central Kentucky important to Lincoln's life, which culminated with him being elected as the nation's 16th president.
