Congregation remembers Music Man in song

February 14, 2008|NANCY LEEDY

There was an obvious void in the congregation of Stanford Christian Church Sunday.

The pew occupied for years by Leroy Boone Sr., his wife, Nancy, and son, Leroy Jr., was vacant of any family members at the morning worship service. Boone lost his battle with cancer Saturday at his home.

Few words were spoken of Boone's passing during the service; instead, the congregation decided to help fill the void by doing what Stanford Christian Church's "music man" loved most - raising their voices in song.

Boone, 70, who became a Christian at the age of 11, served as an elder and Sunday School teacher at Stanford Christian, but most notably as the choir director, leading the music for more than four decades.

David Horseman, who has served as interim choir director since Boone became ill, chose one particular hymn to dedicate to Boone - "Because He Lives," by Gloria and William J. Gaither.

"Leroy loved his music and he loved anything that the Gaithers wrote," said Mr. Horseman. "He liked all their music and, when we wanted to choose one special song to dedicate to him, I thought he would like a Gaither hymn."
