Tourist commission publishes Bicentennial Calendar of Events

February 15, 2008

HARRODSBURG - The Harrodsburg/Mercer County Tourist Commission recently published 10,000 copies of an Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Calendar of Events.

The brochure features Lincoln-related events that are scheduled to take place in Harrodsburg and Mercer County in 2008 and 2009.

Mercer County is included on The Lincoln Heritage Trail, which is comprised of 12 primary sites along the main circuit of the trail.

The main circuit focuses on Boyle, Breckinridge, Fayette, Franklin, Hardin, Jefferson, Jessamine, Larue, Madison, Mercer and Washington counties.

Harrodsburg holds many ties to Lincoln and his family. The most familiar connection is the Lincoln Marriage Temple on the grounds of Old Fort Harrod State Park. It shelters the log cabin where Abraham Lincoln's parents were married in 1806. The local historical society moved the cabin from its original location in Springfield to Old Fort Harrod in 1911.

The Mansion Museum features a collection of Lincoln memorabilia, a life-size painting of Lincoln and displays of Civil War history.

Earlier this year, a Lincoln Bicentennial Committee was formed to plan and coordinate events for the commemoration. Involved in the planning process were representatives from Harrodsburg First, Harrodsburg Historical Society, Harrodsburg/Mercer County Tourist Commission, James Harrod Trust, Mercer County Public Library, Old Fort Harrod State Park, Ragged Edge Community Theatre and Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill.

The calendar of events is available from the tourist commission at Diamond Point Welcome Center, 488 Price Ave. A listing of events is online at www.harrodsburgky.com.
