Wayne too much for West

February 20, 2008|Casey Castle

Four Wayne County players scored in double figures as the Cardinals roll 80-50 over West Jessamine High last Friday.

For the Colts (5-20), it was still a matter of retribution against the Cardinals (17-8). Last year, the Cardinals pounded the Colts, 70-12.

"Coming out of the first half, was not so good," West senior Abby Baxter said. "And we just knew, maybe we weren't going to win it but we had to come and try to redeem ourselves. 70-12 to 80-50, that's definitely an improvement."

And it's not as if Wayne County is any worse. They returned every player from last year's region championship team.

"We did give them some open looks that we didn't need to, just not rotating over," West Coach Deron Norman said. "But they shot tremendously well. We tried to control the tempo and worked on that. We did it at times and broke their defense down, but we weren't consistent with it."

Lauren Lamar tossed in 12 points for the Colts. Baxter had a game-high 21 points in the losing effort.

"Abby's work ethic is second to none," Norman said. "I've coached boys and girls and I've never seen a player work as hard as Abby does. She's never going to give up, she's going to keep battling. I'm glad she's coming around at the end of her senior year and finishing strong because she deserves it."

Part of Baxter's success has come from staying on the court. Earlier in the sesaon, she rarely finished a game due to foul trouble.

She's improved by "coming out and just settling down and controlling myself," she said. "And knowing that I hurt my team when I foul. I'm trying to step out of selfish play."

West hosts the 46th District Tournament and will begin play by facing Mercer County Tuesday night at 6 p.m.

"That's what we're thinking about these last few games, what do we need to do to be effective against Mercer?" Norman said.

The Colts will have a tune-up in their last regular season game, hosting Garrard County Firday night. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m..
