Clark bowlers head to state

March 03, 2008|Katheran Wasson

After a tough conference tournament, the George Rogers Clark High School boys and girls bowling teams are headed to the state tournament.

The boys' team placed first Sunday in the Bluegrass Conference High School Bowling Tournament, and the girls came in second place behind Harrison County.

The Harrison County boys team also qualified for state, placing second.

"I am ecstatic that we came in first - it's just what we had hoped for," Clark coach Gary Rison said. "I am especially pleased that the girls seeded first."

Clark hosted the tournament at Forest Park Lanes. Rison called the event's turnout "outstanding." This is the fourth season for bowling in Clark County, but the first year the team hosted the conference tournament.

"I was very happy with the outcome of today's events," said Clark senior Matt Allen. "If we bowl like we did today, we will have a good chance of winning state."

Clark competed against squads from Scott, Fleming, Harrison and Bourbon counties.

"Today has been awesome, people cheering, adrenaline rushing, and it's extremely competitive," Clark senior Olivia Lawson said. "If more people knew how good we (Clark County) are, we would have more (players) try out, and that would be great."

Harrison County boys coach Jim Holland said he wishes more teams could qualify for the state competition. This is the third year for state, he said, and so far Clark and Harrison counties have represented the Bluegrass each year.

"Clark County is well deserving of first place," he said. "They bowled well as a team and didn't get aggravated."

Approximately 80 counties will be represented at the state competition in Louisville.

"I am looking forward to state. We need to work on our spare techniques," Rison said. "Going to the state tournament is like the Sweet 16 in basketball.

"Until you go the first time, you don't really know how exciting it is."
