Letter: Drinking, driving worse than smoking with bars in Danville

March 06, 2008

Dear Editor,

What happened to "no bars" in Danville? There's a bar at Reno's, Applebee's, O'Charley's, Woody's, Pizza Hut and several other places here in town.

I'm not opposed to having a drink or two after dinner, but in my opinion, and many others, people leaving these places and driving out on the roads intoxicated is so much more dangerous than someone having a cigarette outside away from people.

Granted, I am a nonsmoker and hate cigarette smoke as much as anyone. Most importantly, I'm a mother of two teenage sons, one of which drives, and it scares me to death knowing there are people driving under the influence every night and day six days out of seven. We can choose where we go to dine because most places are smoke-free, but we don't have a choice when it comes to people drinking too much and then driving.

I think more emphasis needs to be focused on drinking and driving than smoking. If you're going to drink, please get a designated driver or call a taxi. A few drinks and a good time are not worth the life of innocent children and adults. I hope and pray I never have to experience the loss of a loved one or a friend because of someone's negligence.
