Letter: Will disregard smoking ban

March 07, 2008

Dear Editor,

Who appointed Roger Trent lord and master over smokers and public buildings? I have news for Mr. Trent and his "hip-pocket commission" - public buildings are for and belong to the public. The public pays for them. They have no right or authority to single out smokers and discriminate against them.

It is a matter of public freedom. I will not permit my liberties and freedoms to be restricted. We've had enough of that from the Bush administration already.

Local issues such as this should be and need to be left up to the public, not to Trent and a handful of commissioners that many of us don't even know. I decide my personal freedoms. This kind of thing happens in North Korea and China. This is America. Who is Roger Trent to decide what is best for the public? So, as far as this liberty and freedom-loving American is concerned, Trent and his backers can go and take a hike. If I desire to smoke, I shall do so whenever and wherever I please. I challenge them to stop me.

I'm sick and tired of our liberties and freedoms being eaten away in this country. I shall totally disregard any ban on smoking. It is my right to smoke. And my rights, my liberties and freedoms mean more to me than any so-called health issue. I dare say that Roger Trent and "his" commission do not hesitate enjoying the many benefits generated by tobacco taxes. Of course not. But then many among us wear two faces.
