Boyle to launch neighborhood litter patrol

March 11, 2008|HERB BROCK

Spring cleaning will take on a whole new meaning in Boyle County during the week of March 23-29.

Two major events in the local war on litter will occur. One is Commonwealth Cleanup Week, an annual statewide program, and the other is the beginning of a new year-round local litter pickup program called HELP - Health Environment Litter Patrol.

Boyle Countians will be able to participate in the statewide cleanup next week and the local HELP program year-round on a family and neighborhood basis. They can do so by forming neighborhood littler pickup patrols.

"We are using the week of the annual Commonwealth Cleanup as the occasion to begin our own new local HELP program," said Donna Fechter, director of solid waste for Boyle County.

"It's important for our county to be part of the statewide cleanup week program, but it is even more important for us to make litter cleanup a year-round thing, something that involves families joining other families in taking care of their own neighborhoods."

Free litter kits

To encourage participation in both programs, Fechter and her staff will distribute free kits containing a litter picker, gloves and plastic bags to the first 100 people who come by her office and sign a pledge to pick up litter in their neighborhoods. The kits will be limited to one kit per family.

The pledge cards and kits will be available from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. March 24 at Fechter's office in the recycling center at the Boyle County Government Services building on the Danville bypass.

Even though the free litter pickers will go to the first 100 people who sign pledges, free gloves and bags will be available to residents the entire week of the cleanup campaign and afterward, Fechter said.
