Boyle student in state spelling bee

Rachel Newcomb won the Bate Middle School and Boyle County spelling bees and advances to the statewide Kentucky Derby Festival Spelling Bee competition on Saturday at Churchill Downs in Louisville.

Wellness Center offers boot camp

McDowell Wellness Center is offering Rookie Boot Camp for people interesting in getting into shape and losing weight.

It will begin 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. March 25 and continue each Tuesday and Thursday for nine weeks. The instructor is Carrie Wilson.

The class will start with a fitness test, a one-mile walk/run, a one-minute push-up test and a one-minute sit-up/crunch test. The same series of tests will be repeated on the final day of class.

A typical class will begin indoors with a 10- to 15-minute series of jumping jacks, push-ups and sit-ups or crunches. This will be followed by an outdoor workout consisting of a walk/run with stops along the way for a series of drills.

To participate, individuals must be able to complete a mile in less than 13 minutes. The cost is $30 for wellness center members and $60 for non-members. To sign up or for more information, call (859) 936-9355 or stop by the member services desk.

Deadline today for fashion show

Tickets for the Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce's fifth annual fashion show, presented by Fort Knox Federal Credit Union, must be purchased by today.

The fashion show and lunch will be 11:30 a.m-1 p.m. Wednesday at Danville Country Club.

Tickets are required and can be purchased at the chamber office in McClure-Barbee House, 304 S. Fourth St. Reservations can be made by calling the office at (859) 236-2361 or e-mailing danboyle@bellsouth.net.

Hospital hosts Make a Blanket Day

Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center will sponsor "Make A Blanket Day" on March 29.

The event is part of Project Linus, a national organization that makes blankets for children who experience trauma or are hospitalized due to sickness.

Activities will be from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Thoroughbred Room on the first floor.

Individuals are asked to bring 1-11/2 yards of fleece material in a color designed for a child and sharp scissors. Sewing experience is not required. Sewing machines and quilt kits will be provided.

Participants should bring a sack lunch. Soft drinks and cookies will be provided. All blankets made will be donated to the hospital for use with pediatric patients.

Animal shelter needs drivers

STANFORD - Lincoln County Animal Shelter needs drivers to help transport about 20 dogs to Ohio. If no drivers can take them, they will be euthanized. For more information, call Loren Estes, Bluegrass Wildlife Rescue in Hustonville, at (859) 260-8400.

Dinner event set

FORKLAND - Forkland's fifth old-fashioned pie supper and spaghetti dinner will be Saturday at Forkland Community Center. The event was re-scheduled due to bad weather. The spaghetti dinner and entertainment begin at 5:30 p.m. and the pie supper and auction begin at 7 p.m. Cost of dinner is $5 for adults and $3 for children.

Fish fry planned

Franklin Masonic Lodge, 400 N. Fourth St., will hold its spring fish fry from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday.

All proceeds will benefit the lodge's community programs. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children 12 and younger and may be purchased at the door or from a Mason. The meal is all you can eat.

Corrections

Due to incorrect information submitted to the newspaper, dates for the upcoming "Jump Start Art" class at the Community Arts Center were incorrect. The correct dates are Tuesday and March 25.

Anderson-Dean Community Park director Mark Bryant's last name was incorrect in a story Feb. 27 about a Little League tournament coming to Mercer County, due to the reporter's error.

Denyo was recognized Tuesday as having the highest percentage increase in employee giving to United Way Heart of Kentucky. It had an increase of 505 percent. That information was incorrect in Wednesday's paper due to wrong information given to the emcee of the banquet and the newspaper.
