Letter: 'Hope copes' for treatment center

March 14, 2008

Dear Editor,

Last week, an article by Bobbie Curd appeared on the front page of The Advocate-Messenger that posed a question: "Does Danville need a drug rehab center?" The question arose when a resident of Danville, whose husband suffered from a serious drug addiction, became concerned about the lack of such a facility here. A Morehead treatment center supplied their needs, but the distance was a drawback to family and friends.

The husband was destined to be incarcerated with little or no professional help available. A close friend of the addict died of a drug overdose, arousing concern of his own condition of not being able to stop drugging. He and his family sought medical advice. The article says he is doing well in Morehead.

Our city is growing by leaps and bounds in all directions - a hospital addition, a new parking garage, a new clinic, a new library annex, a new hospice facility, a new building on Centre College campus and new church buildings. In these new community facilities, we can take delight and be proud. It is my belief that we have the best group of professionals to serve our community.

Let us be aware of the drug and alcohol addiction especially among our young and disenfranchised. Traditionally, our jails and prisons were not built to treat the disease of drugs and alcohol addiction or any other type of addiction.

Personally, I would like to be among the group of Danvillians who pulls together with Liz Cook, Janie Pass and others who are sounding loudly for a drug treatment center. I suggest, and only suggest, at looking at the First Baptist Church vacant educational building on Fourth Street. The old sign out front that says "Hope copes" is addicting.
