Farewell set for "Dreadlock Preacher"

A farewell reception will be held for the Rev. LaMarco A. Cable, senior pastor of Broadway Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) today beginning at 2 p.m. Cable, affectionately known to his flock as "the Dreadlock Preacher," will be preaching his last sermon at the church, 130 W. Broadway, on March 23.

A native of Memphis, Tenn., Cable has accepted the position of Division of Overseas Ministries' program associate for advocacy and education for the Disciples of Christ and United Church of Christ congregations out of Indianapolis, Ind.

Cable is a member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Tennessee Regional Board, the General Board and Standing Committee of Renewal and Structural Reform of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and Transylvania University Pastoral Relations Committee.

He is a past member of the Administrative Committee of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and past area moderator of the East Area of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Tennessee.

While at Transylvania University in Lexington, he was a member of the Disciples on Campus Leadership Council, a charter member and officer of S.E.R.V.E. (Students Exploring Religious Vocation through Education), student coordinator/president for Transylvania Diversity Action Council and resource person for the Transylvania Anti-Hate Coalition.

Cable has been named as a Frederick Douglass Scholar, National Benevolent Association of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Leadership Scholar and a Fund for Theological Education Undergraduate Fellow.

He graduated in May 2002 from Transylvania University with a Bachelors of Arts degree in religion with dual minors in sociology and communication. And he received a master's degree from Lexington Theological Seminar in 2007.

Cable is the son of Jeanette and William Cable.
