Centre softball team sweeps two from LaGrange

March 30, 2008

The Centre College softball team raised its record to .500 Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of LaGrange at Millennium Park that increased its winning streak to four games.

Amber Mills hit a two-run home run to set the stage for a 4-1 win in the first game, and Laura Hufnagle drove in three runs in the second game to help the Colonels win 10-2 in five innings.

Mills, a Boyle County graduate, followed a leadoff single by Lindsey Willett with her first career homer, and Centre (12-12) scored twice more in the first inning to get all the runs it would need in the opener.

LaGrange (12-10) managed only an unearned run in the fourth inning off winning pitcher Tyler Travis, who allowed six hits and struck out eight batters.

In the nightcap, Centre trailed 2-0 before scoring six runs in the fourth inning and four in the fifth.

Willett, Taylor Childress, Charlotte Jones and Rebecca Rhule had two hits each for the Colonels, and two LaGrange errors led to three unearned runs.

Jones earned the win after allowing seven hits.

Centre had only one error in the two games.

"Our defense is actually starting to play much better right now, which is what we want," assistant coach Chris Mason said.

The Colonels last reached .500 on March 16, when they stood at 6-6 before losing six of their next eight games.
