Prep Softball: Burgin splits in All "A" Classic

March 30, 2008

Burgin split two games Saturday in the 12th Region All "A" Classic at Somerset, beating Monticello 9-4 but losing 9-2 to Somerset in a game that decided the title.

The Lady Bulldogs (1-1), playing for the first time this season, cranked out 14 hits in the first game but had only four in the second game. Still, coach Matt Grimes said they gave Somerset (5-0) a battle for much of the game.

"For the first four or five innings we were right in this ballgame. Fatigue set in towards the end of the game, and that got the better of us," Grimes said.

"Somerset was just a better team than us today and they are 5-0 against 12th region opponents. I was proud of how our girls responded for our first outing of the season. We are a better team than we were at the begining of last (season), and that is very promising for the season ahead."

Grimes said he was pleased with the way the Burgin offense performed against Monticello (0-4) in its first game of the season.

"We have placed an emphasis on hitting for this season, and 14 hits is a testament to the girls' hard work," he said.

Tiffany Shewmaker went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Halee Jackson, Nikki Bugg, Paisley Carey, Shelby Lilly and Hannah Harley had two hits each.

Pitchers Bugg and Carey allowed only four hits.

In the second game, Carey was 2-for-3 at the plate, and Shewmaker and Elizabeth Harlow had one hit each.

Burgin trailed 3-2 after 3 1/2 innings and was still within 4-2 at the end of the fourth after Paisley started an inning-ending double play, but Somerset scored once more in the fifth and put the game out of reach with four in the sixth.

Somerset won the regional title by finishing 2-0 in the round-robin event.

Garrard County 6, Ballard 1

At Louisville, Melanie Morrow belted a bases-loaded triple to break open a tight game in the sixth inning as Garrard (3-0) downed No. 7 Ballard in its first game at the Ballard Invitational.

Morrow's two-out hit to right-center field cleared the bases, and she then scored on a wild pitch to cap a five-run inning for the Lady Lions.

Meanwhile, pitchers Whitney Ball and Jessica Speake combined to hold Ballard to two infield singles.

Ball allowed one hit and three walks in four innings. Speake took over in the fifth with Garrard holding a 1-0 lead and gave up Ballard's only run on a groundout following an error. She allowed one hit and one walk with four strikeouts in two innings.

Garrard's big sixth inning began when Hagan Goldey walked, moved to third on a hit by Speake and scored on a wild pitch. After an out, Ball walked and Lindsey Meadors was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Morrow.

Courtney Rhodus drove in the Lady Lions' first run with a first-inning single.
