Gift subscription helps Radio Eye

To the Sun:

It is with the deepest gratitude that I write to thank you for your very generous contributions to Central Kentucky Radio Eye through the continuing gift subscription to The Winchester Sun this past year.

For over 17 years, CKRE has been providing radio reading services to people who are blind, have limited vision, or are physically disabled, and your generous support enables CKRE to improve its current service and extend it to more listeners.

I would also like to take this time to say thank you so much for your continuing support over the years. You have helped make CKRE a success.

Tobacco company wants to prevent kids from smoking

Dear Editor:

The Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services recently released its annual buying survey results of Kentucky retail tobacco outlets - indicating that 94 percent of the surveyed stores were in compliance with state law prohibiting tobacco sales to anyone under 18 years old.

Philip Morris USA believes this is a step in the right direction but that more can be done.

We urge legislators to pass legislation that prohibits self-service sales of tobacco products in retail stores and prohibits any adult from buying or providing tobacco products to a minor.

In addition, it's estimated the commonwealth will receive about $114 million in fiscal year 2008 tobacco settlement agreement payments. More of that money should be directed to youth tobacco use prevention programs.

At Philip Morris USA, we believe we have a responsibility to help prevent kids from using cigarettes and other tobacco products.

While Kentucky has made progress in its efforts to help prevent youth tobacco use, we hope more can be done to help this trend to continue.

Sincerely,

Pam Lieberman
