LC's Weir nominee in all-star campaign

April 03, 2008|Nancy Leedy

Lincoln County High School baseball player Brandon Weir could use your vote.

Weir, an LCHS sophomore pitcher/infielder, is included among the week-one nominees for the Get Healthy Kentucky (GHK) "No Spit" All-Stars.

The 2008 "No Spit" All-Star campaign is a collaborative effort by "The Sports Flash" (TSF) Radio Network and GHK to help reduce tobacco use in the Commonwealth. The "No Spit" campaign honors the best high school baseball players in Kentucky who have pledged not to use spit tobacco or any tobacco products — on or off the field.

Weir was nominated for the weekly honor on his pitching performance in Lincoln's 7-0 win over Casey County and his hitting in Lincoln's opening games. Weir tossed a one-hitter against Casey, striking out 14 Rebel batters. At the plate, Weir is hitting .526 (10-for-19) with two doubles, two home runs, and four runs batted in.

However, Weir's statistics alone will not earn him the weekly all-star honor, with all-star winners determined by online votes.

Lincoln sports fans wishing to cast a vote for Weir must hurry, though, with voting ending at 8 p.m. tonight (Thursday, April 3). The winner will be announced on Friday, April 4.

Other week-one nominees include Trenton Claunch and Ian Powell of Burgin, James Dyer of Clinton County and Billy Logan of Greenup County.

Each week during the 2008 high school baseball season, TSF Radio Network will accept nominations from fans, coaches, parents, and the media for the weekly honor. The nominees must sign the "No Spit" All-Star pledge not to use spit tobacco or any tobacco products at any time.
