Overturned semitrailer closes I-64

April 07, 2008|Fred Petke

An early morning accident shut down Interstate 64 and snarled traffic through Winchester this morning as workers cleaned up the scene.

Police were called to exit 96 at 6:08 a.m. today after a truck overturned and dumped a load of scrap metal.

Winchester Police Sgt. Tony Kirk said the truck was heading toward the westbound off ramp when the truck overturned.

"(The driver) doesn't know what happened, but maybe a load shifted," Kirk said.

The white dump truck turned onto its side and slid 200 feet across both westbound lanes and into the median, where it came to rest, he said.

The driver, 32-year-old Andrew Englehart of Richmond, was not injured, Kirk said.

No citations were issued.

Police believe the truck was the only vehicle involved, but the Sheriff's Office was investigating a report that an eastbound vehicle was struck by debris, Kirk said.

The westbound lanes were closed for approximately three hours before police opened one lane to traffic.

"It's going to be one lane for a while," Kirk said. Contractors were on scene to remove the scrap metal.

Haz-mat crews and Clark County Emergency Management Director Gary Epperson were on the scene after a small amount of diesel fuel spilled from the truck, he said.
