Assistant Police Chief Tony Gray said an inmate who walked off of work detail Monday morning with Boyle County Detention Center was later found behind the soft drink machines at Wal-Mart.
The inmate, Dallas Sanders, 23, of Monticello, had been reported as missing at 11:30 a.m.
Danville Police received a call at 1:14 p.m. Monday about a person matching the description of a jail escapee, saying he had been seen in Wal-Mart.
Sanders originally was lodged on March 26, charged with fleeing and evading police and trafficking in a controlled substance.
The caller who saw him hiding at Wal-Mart told police she learned of the escapee when she dropped her daughter off at Wilderness Trace Child Development Center and was informed by one of the staff.
Gray said the caller told police when she was leaving Wal-Mart, the suspect asked to borrow her cell phone to make a call. She recognized the gray sweats that inmates are allowed to wear at the jail, and was suspicious of his behavior.
