Superintendent touts dual credit as she resigns

April 17, 2008|MICHAEL BROIHIER

Reports of Lincoln County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Teresa Wallace's imminent departure proved to be accurate. At last Thursday's board meeting, Dr. Wallace requested that the school board modify her contract, due to expire June 30, 2009, to expire on June 30 of this year instead. Without discussion, the board approved the request and passed a motion to post the superintendent's job opening the next day.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Dr. Wallace confirmed that she was seeking the superintendent's position in Somerset. On Monday, the Somerset Independent Schools Board of Education voted to hire her to replace Wilson Sears, who will retire soon.

Dr. Wallace, who lives in Hall's Gap, has maintained her family's farm in Somerset and said, "It's just time for me to go home ... but I will miss everything about Lincoln County."

In a later interview, Dr. Wallace said, "I love Lincoln County and I love my job here, but when (the Lincoln County Board of Education) hired me, they knew I was coming here to be close to home so they weren't surprised when I applied for the job."

When asked about any advice for whomever follows her, she stated that while the facilities were in order, and academics were improving, she was concerned about the dual-credit program for LCHS students attending EKU, and hopes that the program will continue.

Board member Tom Blankenship said that a screening committee with representation from teachers and the community will review resumes; however, the board is not compelled to follow the committee's recommendation. "We hope to have someone hired by June first," said Mr. Blankenship.
