Mercer launches education foundation

April 20, 2008|CHARLIE COX

HARRODSBURG - Those wanting to support the future of academics for Mercer County students have a new avenue in which they can channel their aid.

The Mercer County Foundation for Education has been established to further educational ideas and initiatives within the Mercer County school system. The idea behind the foundation is to benefit and enhance the learning experience of all Mercer students.

The nonprofit and tax-exempt organization offers Mercer County businesses, alumni and other foundations and corporate sponsors to take stake in the future of Mercer youth. The foundation allows donations through wills, estates, gifts, fundraising events and other financial contributions.

As a mission statement, the foundation's board of directors will serve as the governing body and oversee the use of money to support the school system. The foundation itself identified four areas to focus on:

* Supporting the district and school initiatives in the gifted and talented program.

* Provide support for enrichment programs students receive outside of the classroom to promote academic success in the classroom.

* Support the district in recognition and commitment to the arts and humanities and the role they play in academic as well as lifetime achievement for students.

* Provide post-secondary scholarship opportunities for all students.

The overreaching goal of the foundation is to raise funds for general and ongoing needs of children from low-income families and support their involvement in school activities; accept donations from individuals who simply want to donate for tax purposes; allocate funds in accordance with the mission guidelines; provide all Mercer County schools with funding; and supporting No Child Left Behind initiatives.

To donate or help with the foundation, please contact Becky Holt at (859) 734-8400, ext. 2095. Donations can be mailed to Mercer County Foundation for Education, c/o Becky Holt, 371 E. Lexington St., Harrodsburg, KY 40330.
