Softball: Burgin sweeps two games in Bardstown tournament

The Burgin softball team scored 10 runs and swept two games Saturday at the Bethlehem Round Robin in Bardstown.

In a 5-2 win against Bethlehem, Tiffany Shewmaker and Hannah Harley each went 2-for-3 and Elizabeth Harlow doubled.

"We were not satisfied with where we were at in the win-loss column and decided after a good Wednesday practice that it was a new season," Burgin coach Matt Grimes said. "I am very pleased with how we performed at the plate and with our desire to not give up."

Nikki Bugg singled and struck out six, walked four and allowed no earned runs as Burgin (4-8) won its third straight game.

Down 2-0, Burgin got three runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth inning.

In the first game, Burgin scored five runs in the second inning and went on for the 5-2 win over Whitefield Academy.

Paisley Carey worked five innings, giving up one hit and two runs with four strikeouts and no walks. Bugg had four strikeouts with a walk in her two innings of work.

Halee Jackson was 2-for-3 hitting, and Carey, Shelby Lilly, Sarah Harlet and Harley all had hits.

Friday's Games

Boyle County 6, Somerset 5 - At Somerset, Tara Allen drove in Kylee Talbott to break a 5-all tie in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Rebels beat Somerset in the first game of the Lake Cumberland Classic.

Emily Woolum and Lindsey Edwards each had two hits for Boyle (9-2), and Cheyenne Brumbaugh struck out six and walked four to pick up the win.

In the first, Hailey Glasscock scored on a wild pitch, Woolum doubled in Hayley Hellyer, Kendra Ross scored on Emily Donlon's fielder's choice and Woolum scored on Talbott's ground out as Boyle led 4-1 after one inning.

After Somerset scored three in the top of the third inning, Boyle answered with a run in the bottom of the third when Woolum singled in Hellyer.

Burgin 14, Monticello 5 - At Danville, Lilly went 3-for-5, Shewmaker was 3-for-4, and Bugg and Sarah Harley each had two hits as Burgin rolled over Monticello at Millennium Park.

Bugg struck out five and walked three over four innings, and Carey picked the win striking out three and walking two over three innings.

Burgin trailed 3-2 before exploding for eight runs in the bottom of the third inning to break the game open. Up 9-5, the Bulldogs added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
